A short post today: I know you’ve all got more important things to be doing.
You have other priorities, right?
Do you know what they are?
I only ask because I’ve recently been introduced to the disparity between what I think are my priorities and how I act.
It was Iain Smith who introduced me.
Iain Smith is the Priority Guy.
He didn’t make me and the disparity shake hands but he let me read the early chapters of his book, The Priority Principle. Within a few pages, I had completely changed the way I think about priorities.
Is Writing Your Priority?
And what has this got to do with writing?
Simple, really. Whenever you’re not writing, you’re accepting that whatever you are doing is more important than your writing.
Iain lays it out quite plainly in the book:
For many people, that deceptively simple sentence “at any given moment your current action is your current priority” is a real ‘Aha!’ moment. Often quickly followed by an ‘Oh, my God!’ moment as its importance becomes apparent.
So, next time you play online sudoku or watch another episode of reality TV, remind yourself that writing is not your priority.
How does that make you feel?
